Do You Need a New Door, or Just a Repair?

We'd rather tell you a repair is enough than sell you a door you don't need. As a general rule, repair makes sense when one part has failed on an otherwise solid door. Replacement makes sense when the door itself is the problem.

Signs It's Time to Replace

Multiple damaged or bowed panels, rust or rot spreading through the door, a door that has been patched repeatedly, or sections that no longer line up are all signs the door is past saving. If repair quotes are adding up to half the price of a new door, replacement usually wins. The same goes for a door with no insulation that turns your garage into an oven every Texas summer.

Signs a Repair Will Do

A broken spring, a frayed cable, or an opener that has stopped responding doesn't mean the door is done. If the panels are straight and the structure is sound, fixing the failed part is almost always the more affordable move.

Choosing the Right Garage Door

Steel, Wood, and Composite

Insulated steel is the most popular choice for San Antonio homes. It holds up to heat and hail-season abuse, needs little upkeep, and comes in a wide range of styles. Wood and wood-composite doors give you a custom, carriage-house look, with more upkeep for true wood. We can walk you through the trade-offs for your home and budget.

Insulation and Heat

If your garage shares a wall with living space, or you use it as a workshop or gym, an insulated door makes a real difference in summer. Insulated doors also run quieter and tend to feel more solid.

Style and Curb Appeal

The garage door is often the largest single feature on the front of your home. We install C.H.I. Overhead Doors in raised-panel, carriage-house, and modern flush styles, and we’ll help you match a design to your home’s architecture. If you live in an HOA community, bring your guidelines and we’ll keep your choices within them.

Garage Door Installation Cost and What to Expect

Installed prices vary with size, material, insulation, and style. As a rough guide, a standard single-car steel door typically starts around $800-$1,500 installed, and a standard two-car door often falls between $1,200-$2,800. Custom, carriage-house, and wood-look doors cost more. You’ll get a firm written quote before we start, and it won’t change once the work begins.

Most residential installations take half a day to a full day. On installation day we remove and haul away your old door, install the new sections, springs, and tracks, adjust the balance, and test the safety sensors and auto-reverse before we leave. If you’re also replacing your opener, we can do both in the same visit with a LiftMaster opener matched to your new door’s weight.

Excellent customer service! I chose Helotes Overhead Garage Doors due to their Yelp rating and customer comments - did not disappoint! The service window time was confirmed the morning of the appointment, & I was kept up-to-date on the status of the service tech coming out. I needed someone to look at the garage door opener installed by another vendor, who ghosted me. The problem was the garage door would not close without holding the button down in the garage. Wes identified the problem within a couple of minutes, fixed it, and even programmed the additional remotes. Again, excellent customer services!

I can't say enought good things about this family owned small business. I have been with them for ten years and they have always delivered their services at a reasonable cost. While the garage door business can be very deceptive, Helotes Overhead has integrity and is honest in their dealings with their clients. My due diligence ...I Idid receive two other estimates, but they were out of line with their cost figures. James did a great job with the install and I believe the new door has actually added value to our home. It looks great from both sides!

Helotes Overhead Garage Doors provided the best customer service experience I could have ever hoped for. My mother needed a new garage door, and they were kind enough to find a good, affordable option for her that would best suit her needs. They did not try to push me on any upgrades that they knew would not benefit my mother. Very grateful for doing such a great job and being so very considerate of our senior citizen community.

Frequently Asked Questions — Garage Door Installation

How much does a new garage door cost installed?

A standard single-car steel door typically runs about $800-$1,500 installed, and a two-car door about $1,200-$2,800. Insulation, windows, custom styles, and wood-look finishes increase the price. We provide a firm written quote before any work begins.

How long does garage door installation take?

Most residential installations take half a day to a full day, depending on the door size and whether we’re also replacing the opener. We’ll give you a realistic window when we schedule.

Should I replace my garage door or repair it?

If the door’s panels are straight and sound, repairing a failed part like a spring or cable is usually the more affordable choice. If panels are bowed, rusted, or heavily damaged, or repair costs are approaching half the price of a new door, replacement is usually the better value.

Is an insulated garage door worth it in Texas?

If your garage is attached to your living space or you use it as a workspace, yes. Insulation helps moderate summer heat, reduces noise, and makes the door feel sturdier. For a rarely used detached garage, a non-insulated door can be a reasonable way to save.

Can I install a garage door myself?

We don’t recommend it. A garage door is heavy, and the springs are under dangerous tension. Mistakes can cause injuries and leave the door unbalanced or unsafe. Professional installation also ensures the safety sensors and auto-reverse are set up correctly.

Will you haul away my old garage door?

Yes. We remove and dispose of your old door as part of the installation, so you aren’t left with a pile of panels in the driveway.

Can you match a new door to my HOA’s requirements?

Yes. Share your HOA’s guidelines on color, panel style, and windows before you choose, and we’ll help you pick a door that gets approved. Many San Antonio-area HOAs also want approval before installation, so it’s worth submitting the plan first.

Do I need a new opener when I get a new door?

Not always. A good opener in working condition can often be reused. If your opener is old, noisy, or underpowered for a heavier insulated door, replacing it at the same time is usually the most cost-effective moment to do it. We’ll tell you honestly which makes sense.
