Common Garage Door Problems We Repair

Most garage door issues fall into a handful of recognizable categories. Here's what we see most often, and what's usually behind it.

  • Broken or Worn Springs

The most common garage door emergency. If your door won't open, feels unusually heavy, or you hear a loud bang followed by the door not moving, a broken torsion or extension spring is almost always the cause. Springs are rated for a certain number of open-close cycles — typically 7-10 years of average use — and wear out predictably. Spring repair typically costs $200-$350 for a standard two-car door. This is not a DIY repair — springs are under extreme tension and genuinely dangerous to handle without proper training and tools.

  • Frayed or Snapped Cables

Cables work alongside the springs to lift the door evenly. A frayed cable often shows up as a door that hangs crooked or drops suddenly on one side. Left unaddressed, a failing cable can snap entirely and cause the door to fall. Cable repair typically runs $150-$250 and is a straightforward fix once diagnosed.

  • Off-Track or Misaligned Doors

If your door is grinding, jerking, or visibly crooked in its tracks, the tracks themselves may be bent, or the rollers may be worn and no longer riding smoothly. This is often caused by an impact — backing into the door, a heavy gust catching it — or simply years of accumulated wear. Track repair costs vary depending on severity, generally $125-$300.

  • Dented or Damaged Panels

A dent from a backed-into car or storm damage doesn't always mean replacing the whole door. Many garage doors are built in sections, and we can often replace just the damaged panel if the manufacturer still produces matching sections. Panel repair typically runs $200-$500 depending on the door's age and whether a match is available.

  • Malfunctioning Openers

If your door won't respond to the remote, reverses before closing, or makes unusual noises during operation, the issue is usually the opener rather than the door itself — a failing motor, misaligned safety sensors, or a logic board issue. We service and repair all major opener brands including LiftMaster. Opener repair typically runs $100-$300; full replacement is $300-$600 installed.

  • Faulty Safety Sensors

The photo-eye sensors near the bottom of your door tracks are a federally mandated safety feature that stops the door from closing on an obstruction. If your door won't close at all, or closes partway and reverses, misaligned or dirty sensors are the most common culprit — often a five-minute fix once we're on-site.

What Happens During a Repair Visit

When you call us, we’ll ask a few questions about what your door is doing — that helps us bring the right parts on the first visit rather than needing to reschedule. On-site, our technician inspects the full system, not just the obvious symptom, since garage door problems often have a related cause (a worn roller putting strain on a track, for example). We’ll explain what we find in plain terms, give you a firm price before doing any work, and complete most repairs in a single visit, typically 30 minutes to 2 hours depending on the issue.

If your door needs something beyond a repair — full replacement, for instance — we’ll tell you that honestly rather than patch something that won’t hold. You can see our installation services if a new door turns out to be the better investment, or our maintenance program if your system is fundamentally sound and just needs regular upkeep to avoid future repairs.

Excellent customer service! I chose Helotes Overhead Garage Doors due to their Yelp rating and customer comments - did not disappoint! The service window time was confirmed the morning of the appointment, & I was kept up-to-date on the status of the service tech coming out. I needed someone to look at the garage door opener installed by another vendor, who ghosted me. The problem was the garage door would not close without holding the button down in the garage. Wes identified the problem within a couple of minutes, fixed it, and even programmed the additional remotes. Again, excellent customer services!

I can't say enought good things about this family owned small business. I have been with them for ten years and they have always delivered their services at a reasonable cost. While the garage door business can be very deceptive, Helotes Overhead has integrity and is honest in their dealings with their clients. My due diligence ...I Idid receive two other estimates, but they were out of line with their cost figures. James did a great job with the install and I believe the new door has actually added value to our home. It looks great from both sides!

Helotes Overhead Garage Doors provided the best customer service experience I could have ever hoped for. My mother needed a new garage door, and they were kind enough to find a good, affordable option for her that would best suit her needs. They did not try to push me on any upgrades that they knew would not benefit my mother. Very grateful for doing such a great job and being so very considerate of our senior citizen community.

Frequently Asked Questions — Garage Door Repair

How much does garage door repair typically cost?

Most repairs run $150-$450 depending on the issue. Spring replacement is typically $200-$350. Cable repair runs $150-$250. Track repair is $125-$300. Panel repair is $200-$500. Opener repair is $100-$300. We give you a firm quote before starting any work, so you know the cost before we touch anything.

My garage door won’t open at all. What’s the most likely cause?

A broken spring is the most common cause of a door that won’t open — especially if you heard a loud bang beforehand or the door feels extremely heavy when lifted manually. Other possibilities include a disconnected opener trolley, a power issue with the opener, or a broken cable. We can diagnose it quickly over the phone or on-site.

Can I repair my garage door myself?

Some tasks are safe for a reasonably handy homeowner — tightening loose hardware, lubricating hinges and rollers, cleaning sensors. Spring and cable work should never be DIY — these components are under extreme tension and have caused serious injuries to people without proper training and tools. If in doubt, call a professional rather than risk it.

How long does a typical garage door repair take?

Most repairs are completed in 30 minutes to 2 hours in a single visit. Spring replacement usually takes about an hour. More involved repairs, like full track realignment or multiple panel replacement, can take longer. We’ll give you a time estimate before starting.

Is it worth repairing an old garage door, or should I just replace it?

Depends on what’s failing and the door’s overall condition. If the door panel itself is structurally sound and only individual components (springs, cables, opener) have failed, repair is almost always the better value. If the door is significantly rusted, warped, or has needed multiple major repairs recently, replacement may be the smarter long-term investment. We’ll give you an honest assessment either way — not a push toward whichever job is bigger.

Why is my garage door making a loud grinding or squealing noise?

Usually dry or worn rollers, a torsion bar that needs lubrication, or hardware that’s worked loose over time. It’s an easy and inexpensive fix if caught early, but it’s worth addressing — the same wear that causes noise also accelerates damage to other components.

Do you repair all garage door brands, or only certain ones?

We repair all makes and models, and all opener brands including LiftMaster, Chamberlain, Genie, and Craftsman. Whether your door is a major national brand or something less common, we can diagnose and repair it.

Do you offer emergency or after-hours garage door repair?

Yes. We understand garage doors don’t fail on a convenient schedule. Call (210) 695-8983 for emergency situations — a door that won’t close and secure your home, or a spring failure that’s trapped a vehicle inside.
