Lift cables run from the bottom corners of your door up to drums on either end of the torsion spring shaft. They carry the door's weight as the spring winds and unwinds, which means they're under heavy tension whenever the door is closed. When a cable fails, one side of the door loses support.
Cables wear from thousands of lift cycles, and rust and moisture speed it up. Look for broken strands, fraying near the bottom bracket, or a cable that hangs loose. A snapped cable usually causes the door to tilt, jam in the track, or refuse to move.
Sometimes the cable isn't broken, it has slipped off the drum. This often happens after a door has been forced, hit, or run with a broken spring, and it leaves the door lopsided and stuck. The cable and drum need to be inspected and reseated by a professional, since the system is under tension.
A broken spring can snap a cable, and a snapped cable can damage the spring, tracks, or panels. That's why we inspect the whole lift system whenever we replace one part. If the door is already off-track, see our track repair page as well.
Garage door cable repair typically costs about $150-$350 depending on whether one or both cables are replaced and whether other parts need attention. We usually recommend replacing both cables together, since they’ve carried equal load for the same number of cycles. Most cable repairs take under an hour once we’re on site, and you’ll have a firm quote before we start.
Because the cables are attached to a spring system under high tension, working on them without the correct procedure can cause the cable or drum to release suddenly. Cable and spring injuries are among the most common garage door accidents. If your cable is frayed, hanging, or off the drum, leave the door alone and call us.

Excellent customer service! I chose Helotes Overhead Garage Doors due to their Yelp rating and customer comments - did not disappoint! The service window time was confirmed the morning of the appointment, & I was kept up-to-date on the status of the service tech coming out. I needed someone to look at the garage door opener installed by another vendor, who ghosted me. The problem was the garage door would not close without holding the button down in the garage. Wes identified the problem within a couple of minutes, fixed it, and even programmed the additional remotes. Again, excellent customer services!Posted on Google![]()

I can't say enought good things about this family owned small business. I have been with them for ten years and they have always delivered their services at a reasonable cost. While the garage door business can be very deceptive, Helotes Overhead has integrity and is honest in their dealings with their clients. My due diligence ...I Idid receive two other estimates, but they were out of line with their cost figures. James did a great job with the install and I believe the new door has actually added value to our home. It looks great from both sides!Posted on Google![]()

Helotes Overhead Garage Doors provided the best customer service experience I could have ever hoped for. My mother needed a new garage door, and they were kind enough to find a good, affordable option for her that would best suit her needs. They did not try to push me on any upgrades that they knew would not benefit my mother. Very grateful for doing such a great job and being so very considerate of our senior citizen community.

Most often it’s ordinary wear from thousands of lift cycles, sped up by rust and moisture. A broken spring, or forcing a door that is stuck or off-track, can also put sudden strain on a cable and break it.
We strongly advise against it. With a cable down, one side of the door loses support, and forcing it can bend the door, damage the tracks, or cause the door to fall. Leave it closed and call us.
Often yes. The cable and drum need to be inspected and reseated correctly, and we’ll check why it slipped, since a worn drum, loose cable, or off-balance door may be the cause.
We recommend it. Both cables have carried the same load for the same number of cycles, so if one has failed from wear, the other is usually close behind. Replacing both keeps the door lifting evenly.
They’re closely connected. A failed spring can snap a cable, and a snapped cable can damage the spring. That’s why we inspect the whole system on every visit.
Most cable repairs take under an hour on site. If the door is also off-track or the spring needs attention, it may take a little longer, and we’ll tell you before we start.
If your door is stuck shut with a car inside, or stuck open and leaving the home exposed, yes. We offer after-hours emergency service for situations that can’t wait. Otherwise, keep the door still and call us for the next available appointment.
