A broken garage door spring is the single most common garage door emergency — and one of the most dangerous to handle yourself. Helotes Overhead Garage Doors has been repairing and replacing garage door springs throughout San Antonio and Helotes since 1985. We carry spring inventory on every truck, which means most spring repairs are completed the same day we're called.

Most residential garage doors use one of two spring systems, and knowing which one you have helps explain what's actually happening when something breaks.
Mounted horizontally above the door on a metal shaft, torsion springs are the standard on most homes built in the last 20-30 years. They wind and unwind to lift the door using torque rather than direct pull. Torsion springs are rated by cycle count — typically 10,000 cycles, or roughly 7-10 years of average use (2-4 cycles a day). A two-car door usually runs two torsion springs working together; if one breaks, the door becomes extremely difficult or impossible to lift, even with the second spring intact.
Mounted along the horizontal tracks on either side of the door, extension springs stretch and contract to assist lifting. They're more common on older homes and lighter doors. Extension springs typically have a shorter lifespan than torsion springs and, without a safety cable running through them, can become a projectile hazard if they snap under tension — one more reason professional installation and safety cables matter.
The signs are usually unmistakable: a loud bang from the garage (often mistaken for something falling or even a gunshot), a door that won't budge or feels dramatically heavier when lifted manually, or a visible gap in the coil when you look at the spring itself. If your opener strains, reverses, or trips its breaker trying to lift the door, a failed spring is the most likely cause.
Spring replacement typically costs $200-$350 for a standard single spring on a residential door, parts and labor included. Two-car doors with dual torsion springs often run $250-$450 since most professionals recommend replacing both springs together — if one has failed from wear, the other is usually close behind, and replacing both avoids a second service call and ensures even tension on both sides of the door.
A standard spring replacement takes about 45 minutes to an hour. We carry the most common spring sizes on our trucks, so most calls are resolved in a single visit without needing to order parts. During the visit, we’ll also check the cables, rollers, and overall door balance, since a failed spring sometimes indicates or causes wear elsewhere in the system — a cable under sudden extra strain, for instance, or tracks that have shifted slightly from the imbalance.

Excellent customer service! I chose Helotes Overhead Garage Doors due to their Yelp rating and customer comments - did not disappoint! The service window time was confirmed the morning of the appointment, & I was kept up-to-date on the status of the service tech coming out. I needed someone to look at the garage door opener installed by another vendor, who ghosted me. The problem was the garage door would not close without holding the button down in the garage. Wes identified the problem within a couple of minutes, fixed it, and even programmed the additional remotes. Again, excellent customer services!Posted on Google![]()

I can't say enought good things about this family owned small business. I have been with them for ten years and they have always delivered their services at a reasonable cost. While the garage door business can be very deceptive, Helotes Overhead has integrity and is honest in their dealings with their clients. My due diligence ...I Idid receive two other estimates, but they were out of line with their cost figures. James did a great job with the install and I believe the new door has actually added value to our home. It looks great from both sides!Posted on Google![]()

Helotes Overhead Garage Doors provided the best customer service experience I could have ever hoped for. My mother needed a new garage door, and they were kind enough to find a good, affordable option for her that would best suit her needs. They did not try to push me on any upgrades that they knew would not benefit my mother. Very grateful for doing such a great job and being so very considerate of our senior citizen community.
A single torsion or extension spring replacement typically costs $200-$350, parts and labor included. Two-car doors with dual torsion springs often run $250-$450, since we generally recommend replacing both at once for balanced, even wear.
Torsion springs are typically rated for about 10,000 cycles, roughly 7-10 years of average residential use. Extension springs often wear out somewhat sooner. Heavier doors, more frequent use, and extreme temperature swings can shorten that lifespan.
Springs almost always fail from ordinary metal fatigue after reaching their cycle limit — it just tends to happen suddenly rather than gradually. Occasionally, lack of lubrication, corrosion, or a manufacturing defect accelerates the failure. Either way, once one spring fails, it’s a sign the system has reached the end of its service life.
We strongly recommend against it. Torsion springs are wound under extreme tension, and releasing or adjusting that tension without the correct winding bars and technique has caused serious injuries to people attempting DIY repairs. This is one job where professional service is worth every dollar.
You don’t strictly have to, but we recommend it. If one spring failed from normal wear, the other has typically undergone the same number of cycles and is close to failing itself. Replacing both at the same time means even tension across the door and avoids paying for a second service call in the near future.
Same-day service is available in most cases — we carry standard spring sizes on our trucks specifically so we don’t need to reschedule for parts. Call (210) 695-8983 and we’ll get you on the schedule as quickly as possible.
Yes — describe what you’re seeing or hearing when you call and we can usually confirm a spring issue over the phone, then bring the right parts for a same-visit repair.
It depends on your situation, but we treat it with urgency either way. A door with a broken spring is often stuck closed (trapping a car inside) or, less commonly, stuck open (a security concern). We offer after-hours emergency service for situations that genuinely can’t wait.
A broken spring doesn’t have to mean a stuck car and a ruined day. Call (210) 695-8983 for the fastest response, or fill out the form below and we’ll get back to you promptly.
